Jefferson Davis Heritage Trail

Currently under construction, the Jefferson Davis Heritage Trail is projected for completion within the next 18 months, and will help preserve and teach people of all ages about  DodgeCounty’s significant role in Civil War history.

Dodge County has two locations on the Jefferson Davis Heritage Trail commemorating Confederate President Jefferson Davis’ historic route prior to his capture. The interpretive markers and roadway signs are slated for installation shortly.

One location marks where President Davis camped overnight with his family and a small force of Confederate soldiers on May 8, 1865, two days before his capture in Irwin County. Located at US 280/GA 87, the marker stands adjacent to the oak tree to which Jefferson tied his horse.

The second is located near the historic Parkerson Church, off present-day Hwy. 341 and Friendship Baptist Road.  This route led the group through present-day Rhine and then onto the river. The Parkerson Church, built as a log house in June of 1831 by Jacob Parkerson, is one of the oldest churches in Dodge County.
